Detoxification is only a process of substance abuse treatment. It is through medications and prolonged rehabilitation that detoxification has come to be known as a treatment.  Medications are used to manage the withdrawal period and present relapse. They could also be used to treat several co-occurring conditions in patients.

Medicines to manage withdrawal symptoms

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved non-opioid medicine by the name lofexidine to reduce opioid-related withdrawal symptoms. The FDA also acknowledges that about 80% of detoxifications require administration of some kind of medicine for successful treatment.

Medicines used to prevent relapse

Every abused substance requires a different medicine to re-establish brain function that will decrease cravings. Each person with an addiction has to be administered medicines according to every substance they have abused.

·    Opioid abuse – Medicines such as buprenorphine, naltrexone, and methadone are used to help a person through the detoxification of opioid addiction. Buprenorphine and methadone work on the same target in the brain as morphine and heroin and help relieve cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Naltrexone is used later since it blocks the effects of any opioid on the brain receptors.

·    Tobacco – The only two FDA medicines for nicotine addiction are varenicline and bupropion. They work best in combination with behavioral therapy and can be found over-the-counter.

·    Alcohol – The three medicines that are FDA approved to treat alcohol addiction are naltrexone, acamprosate, and disulfiram. The fourth promising medicine is topiramate, which has been effective during clinical trials.

Substance abuse is a complex issue, but it can be treated. With the help of proper treatment and help, anyone can overcome this issue.
